This morning, Olympia Museum, which houses one of the most valuable collections of objects from ancient Greek, was overrun by thieves. Athens police said two men entered the museum at 7:30 (GMT), tied a museum employee who was on duty, then broke the windows of which were removed 68 pieces of ancient pottery and bronze. Following the incident, the Greek Minister of Culture, Pavlos Geroulanos, resigned.
“A total of 68 ceramic and bronze objects were stolen by two people wearing masks” and went in the morning in one of two museums in the city of Olympia, known for carrying the Olympic Games, said a source police. Mayor Olimpya, Thymios Kotzias, told public radio that the robbers were armed and that they set break when the guards changed shift, according to The Guardian.
“The items stolen were invaluable,” said the mayor.
Olympia Museum is within walking distance of Temple of Hera, where the Olympic torch lights up every year.
